UCLA STUDENT TASERED FOR FAILING TO SHOW STUDENT I.D.

In a scene that might have come striaght out of NAZI GERMANY or COMMUNIST RUSSIA or RED CHINA, twenty-three year-old UCLA student Mostafa Tabatabainejad was repeatedly shocked by a high-powered Taser on Tuesday night, November 14, 2006 (11:30pm) in the on-campus Powell Library Computer Lab. His crime? Failing to show a student I.D. during a random check. The entire incident was video recorded on a cell phone owned by another student, and promptly uploaded to YouTube.com.

I have reproduced the video above, in which the student can be heard yelling at the police to leave him alone, and screaming upon his being Tasered, which at one point, he exclaims:

"Here's your Patriot Act, here's your fucking abuse of power!"

As the student was not in any way threatening to either the police or to the peace of the computer lab, several bystanders began to demand the police officers badge numbers. While it is unclear from the video itself whether or not the police complied with the many requests, my own recent experience with the local police in my area of the United States leads me to surmise that all such requests were denied. Local police, which have become increasingly militarized in the past ten years, have now taken to wearing black fabric patches, are Velcroed to their uniform to cover their badge number and the officers' identity.

The police began demanding that the student "Stand up, or you will be Tasered again." His response was to remain seated, where he yelled back, "I told you I would leave!" The entire incident, which was video recorded, lasted some seven minutes, in which the police officers clearly violated the civil rights of the student.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-LA) has called for an investigation into the situation, in which the police clearly over-reacted, and the group had been contacted by multiple UCLA students, who expressed deep concern over this matter.

Considering WHOM it is that is governor of California right at the moment, a man who has professed his admiration of Adolph Hitler and has fantasized about becoming a dictator, this type of behavior is none too surprising from the police.
